Lauded by celebrated architect Hugh Wallace as a “masterclass in ergonomics”, this diminutive home was a finalist on RTÉ’s Home of the Year in 2019. Having been abandoned for fifteen years, it needed a full internal rebuild and renovation. Spatial planning was key, and the ground floor was opened up completely, with a new centralised staircase designed with glass panels, with a cosy work-from-home nook incorporated under the stairs that is lit by a roof light well. A split-level bathroom was then designed around the new staircase. From 3D fireplace tiles, to shelves displaying curios from travels, and clever storage under the corner banquette seating until and bookshelves built around the perimeter of the ceiling, the small house retains a feeling of space, but is still brimming with personality.
